Healthy Living Is Not A Chore...

So often do people comment on how relieved I must feel now that I "don't have to train as much or as hard" since...

I don't have any fitness competitions on my radar.

And every time...

I find myself answering the same thing over and over again.

"I love training! Just because I'm not competing doesn't mean I'm not training hard, without effort, or that I've stopped." (To me...lifting, running, cycling, whatever it may be, is not something I view or feel is a chore yet, it's something I crave doing.)

I feel good. I feel strong. I feel alive.

Granted...

It wasn't always this way.

Talk to me almost 5 years ago...

I would have laughed at the thought of lifting a single finger, let alone...

Putting running shoes on.

I had no problems lifting a fork.

That being said...

On this present day...

That has totally changed.

After turning my lifestyle around and...

Focusing and committing myself to my health (both in body and mind)...

Not a single day goes by do I wish I could go back to my sedentary ways.

Of course...

The transition wasn't an easy one....

I mean...

I was soooooo used to doing anything but exercise or, be mindFUl of what I ate that...

Turning my couch potato habits around wasn't as easy as making tatter tots. (If you know what I mean!)

I soon learned that slicing and dicing sweet potatoes wasn't easy ;)

No doubt...

My decision to get healthy meant that I needed {to}...

  1. Invest in myself: I had to stop making excuses about not having the time any more. I needed to ensure that I took some time out of my day and invest it in me, once and for all.
  2. Adapt: I had to open my eyes to change and realize that the transition wasn't (always) going to be easy. That there would be ups and downs. I had to realize that sometimes (often times) it takes time to adapt to new things, especially when they greatly affect your entire being. And I knew for sure I would need to adapt to all the new and exciting changes I would be incorporating into my life.
  3. Make a commitment: I knew if I wasn't committed to my goal that I wouldn't be able to make the change I wanted last. If I was going to invest myself in my health, I had to commit myself, FUlly.
  4. Have a will: I had to be willing to do what was needed in order to get moving in the direction I wanted to go. I knew that without the will to get started, the motivation to get healthy would soon disappear.
  5. Want: I had to want to do this. If I didn't then there was no way this goal of mine would realize itself on its own. I had to work for it. Own it.
Having said all that....

Ever since I committed myself to making healthy living a lifestyle...

I couldn't imagine my life without exercising or nourishing my entire being right. (And I am so grateFUl to SuperFit for believing in me and getting me started (and on track) right from the get go. And for everyone who supported me along the way. I have learned so much in this journey of mine and I'm still learning. Still learning to balance it all (it's an on-going practise) as I continue forward.)

I mean...

I love how alive and energized this lifestyle makes me feel.

I love how empowering it feels to lift what I never thought possible...

Or, to...

Or, to...

Stretch my body (and mind) in ways I couldn't have ever imagined!

Without a doubt...

I definitely don't feel like I have to train, or exercise or nourish myself the best way I know how because now...

And for the past 4 1/2 years...

These are things I want to do. For me. (I feel good from the inside out so why would I stop?)

I don't need to relieve myself from any of my new-found healthy living ways of mine (although rest is important!) because...

If anything...

Taking care of my overall well-being has been a form relief for me (not a restriction) in and of itself! (It's a lifestyle that is here to stay...doing what I can when I can knowing that I am doing ME good! )

This is not a chore.

Question FU You...

Do the principles of healthy living feel like a chore for you? Like something you have to do? Did it ever?

  2. Omg, if you could put this post on a t-shirt so I could wear around my friends and family! I don't think I've convinced them enough that my journey has gone beyond wanting to lose weight for vanity issues. I mean at first it was kind of that way, but now I do this for my overall physical AND mental health. I could go on and on...but I won't. Btw, your transformation is a-ma-zing! Keep up the great work!

  3. I love this! I think society makes eating right seem like such a drag and exercising even worse, but once you do it and realize how delicious good food is and how good it feels to move your body, you realize that it is awesome!

  4. love this post! sometimes I feel like cooking clean or healthy is a chore - with my crazy food /stomach issues. but, if i ever get lazy on it or eat something that my stomach does not like, it just reminds me of how important it is to eat the way i do.

  5. I think this is the key right here, that it doesn't feel like a chore, or work that you dread. It's just part of what you do and you wouldn't be doing it if you didn't enjoy it. I have had people question my mileage when not training for a race - saying things like, you're not training why are you still running that many miles. I do it because I love it. Not because I feel like I have to do it or always have to be training.

  6. I was just talking to my husband last night about how good healthy food tastes. We have been traveling a lot over the last 2 months and have been out of our normal routines and in a bit of a funk. We're getting back on track, and working out and eating right just feels so good. Definitely not a chore! It's when you're in the middle of a 'funk' it might feel that way, but you just gotta get through it.

  8. What a great post Kierston. I love the healthy lifestyle that I lead, can't imagine it any other way. I hope that this gets read by people who want to make changes but are afraid that they will be unhappy and deprived if they do. Sharing all over the place :-)

  9. I love this post! I'm really working on seeing my choices not as choices I'm making to work towards a goal, but choices I'm making for a good life in general.

  12. it's more definitely a WANT but it does take a while to get. Trusting the process is half the battle, trusting you will see health that way when you were once sedentary. BUT.. YOU DID IT
