Beyond Face Value...

Over the past few weeks...

I've been giving a lot of thought into the notion of beauty.

What it is, how do I define it, what it means to me, how it affects me as a person and...

What it is about the word that makes us so insecure at times. (Or maybe it doesn't for you, I don't know.)

Beauty is an interesting thing as a whole because it means something different to everyone and...

It holds a different level of 'importance' from one person to the next.

When I think beauty at face value...

I immediately think of it as...well...face value. (And how it captures me!)

In no particular order...

Beauty can capture me in many shapes and forms.

From personality, to looks, to colour, to love, to a person, to a piece of art (etc.)...

Beauty is really something I simply cannot define other than saying it's anything that leaves a beautiFUl impression on me.

Be it tangible or intangible.

Beauty in happiness.
Beauty in the road ahead.

If anything...

Everyone has a different definition of what beauty means to them!

Because we each see and are (have been) impacted by beauty differently. (Every definition stems from a different place rooted deep down within each of us.)

I must admit...

The many posts, status updates, videos and articles I've read on this subject have brought back many memories of my past but...

It has also made me see how far I've come with my own insecurities! (I'd be lying if I told you I didn't have any which, I'm still working through today.)

That being said...

I can't help but think about how beauty is still so very much associated with how we look as opposed to who we are as individuals.

**There is still so much pressure to look a certain way in order to FIT in that, it's still so easy to get lost in the shuffle of it all..speaking from personal experience of course.**

No matter what people tell us or describe us as...

A sketch my sister drew of me years ago.
BeautiFUl isn't it? :)

How we feel about our own beauty has to come from within! (No matter what, we have to see it for ourselves in order to believe it! And, I don't mean what is found only on the exterior!)

Don't get me wrong though...

I do very much enjoy taking care of my overall well-being and putting effort into my appearance (because I like it and it makes me feel good) but...

I am more than just what I put out there at 'face value'! (I am more than thatBeauty is a multitude of things combined! Not just one!)

I am more than just a...

I love just being me (for who I am, what I represent and the values I stand by!) and...

I love paying attention to (and taking care of) what's happening on the inside as...

I continue to grow as an individual! (And evolving as a person!)

At the end of the day...

Beauty is yours to define and...

It's up to you to discover and see how beautiful you really are from the inside out.

Question FU You...

How do you define beauty?

More ways you can follow ME:

  1. When I find myself thinking "that's beautiful," I'm usually looking at something in nature -- a sunrise, a mountain view, the ocean. Of course, people can be beautiful too - on the inside and in their looks.

    1. So much beauty in the world around us.

  2. we are totally on the same wavelength today, girl. i wrote a "what's beautiful" post today too. there's so much beauty in the world, within every person. itz helpful to take the time to see it and appreciate it. xo

  3. You're right...there is so much that goes into what beautiful is. My daughters, nature, art...are things that I find so easy to call beautiful. When it comes to people (other than my girls) I find that someone who has a beautiful personality makes a huge impact!

  4. I'm one of those who rarely look at the appearance of others and think - oh, she/he's beautiful. However, in the morning when I watch the sun come up or when I see the stillness of the lake I often comment on how beautiful it is. The same thing happens with music and lyrics!
So, yes, I definitely think that beauty if beyond face value - things like a new mom holding her baby for the first time, a big brother helping a younger sibling - always beautiful!!

  5. Beauty has so many forms and is very subjective! Life in and of itself is beautiful - I sometimes get caught up in the notion of comparison, but remember that each individual was given different gifts because God felt us best suited ;)

    1. So very true Kat. Life is beautiful and it's up to us to discover and explore it's beauty xo

  6. I love the picture of your dog loving life. That is beautiful. There are so many moments of beauty in life that if we don't stop to let the moments sink in, they pass. I think energy and enthusiasm are beautiful - it's a whole package, not just face value. Love your thoughts today :-)

Great post and I agree that Beauty is so much more than just our appearance. For me, people are beautiful who smile, or show their emotions - I love faces that express life. Nature is beautiful - in all its forms. Relationships and Families are beautiful. Smiling is beautiful.

  8. amen amen amen!! i think true beauty does come from withing then radiates OUT! like you. So well said! <3

  9. Such a great post! Sometimes it is hard to find the beauty in ourselves, but we need to know that it is there! :)

  10. I think that beauty shines through us and into our faces! A 'beautiful' face isn't really apparent unless there is also beauty within.

  11. Love this post!
It is important to believe we; ourselves are beautiful as hard as it may be sometimes :)

  12. You are beautiful - your spirit, your presence, your approach to life. When I think of beauty, it's often something where joy and happiness shines through from the core (if that makes sense). Beauty is more than just face value!

    1. Thank you so much Christine! Wow.

  13. I personally see beauty as determination, fight & ambition!!!

  14. It has taken me a long time to find the beauty within myself and not just outward beauty that we are always immediately judged on. Thank you for writing this, beauty on the inside to me is more important than beauty on the outside.

  15. Beauty is accepting what you cant change, working with what you have and if you are changing something...giving it all you have.

    1. Like I tweeted, I love this.

  16. Amen!! I'm learning that beauty isn't about what's on the outside or the number on the scale. Beauty on the inside is definitely more important.

  17. Love this post Kierston!!! Very thought provoking & so true - beauty comes in so many ways & forms! But yes, the look aspect of it is the one that comes to mind most for people! I always think of Hawaii when I think of beauty too! :)

On the looks, like you, I have & still am overcoming years of this crap about how we have to look & what is beautiful to the world & media.. unfortunately it is still out there & I will continue to write about I am Enough, my struggles & also our need to change this for girls so that they do not get caught up in it - they still are!

The unfortunate thing is that it still matters in this world for jobs & how people are treated - an unfortunate aspect of it.

Hopefully with us all writng & maybe just getting the media to take notice, we can change this eventually especially for our youth. Being honest, I don't expect to see it in my lifetime based on what I see on TV & in the magazines & in the movies right now. It is better but a long ways to go.

    Beautiful post Kierston!

    1. Especially for our youth Jody. Especially.

  18. I think beautiful...is loving yourself for who you are

  19. the last pic of you IS beauty! but so am i, and so are all the readers of this post, and so are so many other things in life. if there was only one way to be beautiful this world would be mighty boring! i'm glad there are so many definitions.

  20. I definitely agree you've got to work on your self confidence and insecurities from the inside out as only working on the outside will only get you so far.

What an inspiring and beautiful post. Thanks for sharing as always :)

  21. Hi Girl,

    1. It was xo
      thank you darling <3

  22. I define it by DOING UNTO OTHERS.

  23. I love this, you have reminded us that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and that beauty lie everywhere if we just open ourselves up to it.

  24. This is a really great post! As an organization formed around college females, this post really hits home. A lot of times the definition of beauty is only skin deep. Thanks for sharing this!
