One Year Later...

One year ago today (July 16)...

I competed in my very first Fitness Competition!

I can't believe it's already (only) been a year since I stepped on stage!

I was so happy I didn't fall flat on my face in those high heels!
lol

Reminiscing...

The process leading to the big day and the experience itself made for a lifetime of memories! (Those of which I will forever cherish!)

To be honest...

I never went in with the intention to win.

That wasn't my goal but it was definitely an incredible bonus! Words cannot describe my trembling hands, mouth and the tears I cried when I received my Trophy!

My goal and my decision to compete was to prove to myself I could do the unimaginable (for me), and that...

I could attain what I thought to be the impossible, for a person like myself.

I recollect (and wrote down) these words when I decided to commit myself to a competition:

"I've attained a level of fitness which far surpasses anything I could have ever imagined. I want to compete because it will have demonstrated my upmost dedication to myself and it would be the most difficult challenge ever presented to me in my journey of 're-discovering my physical side'. This is for me, not for anyone else.

I mean...

I was a girl who didn't care about her health nor her fitness! (Boy has that ever changed! lol)

I remember...

My Dad always trying to persuade me into doing exercise during my University years and once I entered the professional sphere but...

I had no interest.

I didn't care for it, nor did I "have the time". (I chose not to make the time!)

His attempts failed due to my lack of appreciation for my well-being, for myself.

"Times they are a changing!" (With time, my habits changed and I began treating myself like I should have been all along!)

Fast forward to the present...

And now...

Not for one second do I wish I could go back to my old lifestyle, that being one of...

A sedentary couch potato!

Yup.
That was me.
source

Not one day goes by that...

I am not thankFUl for SuperFit for his direction, advice and support when I started (and continue) my journey in Health and Fitness.

My Dad, for pushing me to get active. (Even if he thought I would never stick to it when I first started based on my track record lol)

007 for motivating and helping me believe in myself and my true potential and...

My family, friends and YOU for supporting and encouraging me throughout!

Gosh, I remember feeling so shy and out of place when I entered the gym for the very first time! (And now, it's my second home! lol)

Which brings me to this...

For a number of months...

I've flirted with the idea of competing again!

My list of things to bring with me to the competition.

I've been back and forth in wanting to commit to a competition simply based on the fact...

I didn't know why I would need to compete, again.

Competing was a goal I had given myself to achieve, for me, not for the sake of being competitive and winning! (Competitions have always scared me in every aspect of my life! I just want to be my personal best and give 110% in everything  I do...I compete with myself...but that's a whole other post lol!)

So why did the idea of doing it again keep on finding its way into my brain?!

A big influencer (if not the reason for wanting to do it again) was my being backstage with the girls at their competition not long ago!

Even though I was there, with them (while I helped with coordination of the event itself)...

A part of me wanted to be doing the competition as well.

I missed it. A lot.

Although I went through some ups and downs post-competition (which I'll save and get into at another date!)...

I missed the thrill of getting ready for the big day and being a part of a great team! (At the gym, on stage and backstage!)

Getting tanned up!
Having FUn.
Getting ready to hit the stage!

And quite honestly...

The training nor the diet would be any of the reasons why I would choose not to do it because...

I still train at the same level as I did prior, during and after the competition...

Bent Over Barbell Rows!
Back Workout!
Join the Chin Up Challenge!
#CHINUPWITHFU

And my eating habits, well...

They haven't drastically changed since the competition (although my body did, which is normal!) aside from the fact less carb cycling is involved and the rules aren't as strict (I put in place my own restrictions and moderation for the sake of what I want to maintain, physically!)...

Still lovin' my...
Gluten Free Oatmeal Protein Pancakes
Egg Whites with Spinach, Tomatoes and Ground Flax Seeds
Chicken Bowl
Seared Tuna Steak with a Long Red Pepper!
No Bread Tuna Melt

And of course...

My post-competition 'diet' has definitely allowed for some treating :) (Again, in moderation)

You all know how much I love my *CaNdY*

I was in *CaNdY* Heaven.
Popcorn Thief.

Plus...

With my goal to lean out for the summer time, I've been pretty well following a pre-competition diet!

So why not do another right?!

Sort of right!

Without going into much detail...

I wanted to make sure both my body and mind were ready for it!

Ready for the patience it would require to achieve the progress I'd be seeking (my metabolism quickly adjusts to anything you throw at it so we continuously have to switch things up in order to keep it moving!) and to appreciate the time and energy spent in preparing for a show, every step of the way! (Taking more time to truly see how my body is evolving as well as to focus my mind on what I'm doing, in the present moment, as opposed to focusing on getting to the final 'package' at the end of my prep, fast!)

To be quite honest...

I've reflected and learned a lot since my last show!

And with that knowledge...

My plan would be to apply my new learnings to this prep, this time around! (And put into practice what I learned for post-competition as well!)

I mean...

I still reflect and talk about my experience because I've been able to take in so much out of this life milestone of mine, even...

One year later! (The experience really taught me a lot about myself!)

**I am so grateFUl for my friends, you know who you are, who have listened to my and shared their experiences in doing a competition and what they have taken and learned from it as well! It's quite incredible what we have been able to discover about ourselves, our bodies and our minds**

So given the time spent on my reflections and learnings...

I'm ready!

I'm ready both mentally and physically to commit myself to doing another Fitness Competition!

So now the question is...When?!

The decision has already been made!

I will be competing this Fall (yes, this Fall!) on October 20!

Yuppers!

There's no denying...

I am super duper excited to be joining the 14 other girls (some new, others returning!) from Florida Fitness Aylmer and...

I can't wait to share our journeys together!

Also...

I'm definitely curious and excited to see how (and if) my last year in training has changed my physique (based on muscle gains) once I'm stage ready! (Not big changes, just little things like my calves having developed  and 'grown' more over the past year for example!)

***

If you're wondering about my progress...

I will be updating you as I go along!

So when do I start?!

The official, official prep begins on July 23!

Having said all of that...

I feel good.

My mind is in the right place and...

I'm ready for this! :)

Here's my first progress shot:

Yes.
Those are Betty Boop pyjama pants :)

Questions FU You...

1. Have you ever been interested in competing in a Fitness Competition?
2. When committing yourself to a goal, do you take the time to reflect on why you're doing it and what you hope to achieve from it?

  22. You will do GREAT! I ended my first show knowing I would never do another because it didn't fit me well with my past disordered eating. However, how you describe feeling about a new show and applying what you learned to see what more is possible, that's exactly how I felt about marathoning. You are going to do so awesome and I can't wait to witness it all through the blog!

  23. The discipline required to do a fitness competition is enough to be admired. Seriously...it floors me. SO excited to watch you progress and hit the stage! Congrats on making the decision to go for it again. :D (I LOVE the picture of you kicking...you look so strong and confident. :))

As for competing: man, I have some weight to lose still...just for my own good. About 35 pounds to go. I've flirted with the idea of trying for a competition just to put an edge on my weight loss. To see just how disciplined I can be. Training for this half marathon has proven to me that I can be disciplined, but I've learned that there's always something to be learned...and improved. I want to go for baby #3 before I try for anymore big, not-yet-attained goals. So I'll be waiting a while on this. ;)

    Good luck, girlfriend!

    1. There's definitely a whole lotta discipline that goes into it but it's all worthwhile!

      Thanks for the motivation! :)

Amazing job on the weightloss girl! WoW!

There's always something to learn, no matter what it is you do!

      Keep it up Melissa!!! xo

  24. WOW!! You are amazing & look great now!!! Can't wait to hear & see more!!!! Yes, I did amateur bodybuilding in my late 30's. I did 2 years in a row BUT it took me about 3 years to pack on the muscle for the first one. After the 2nd year, drugs were too common in bodybuilding so I stopped competing but never stopped my love of weights! :-)

    1. I love weights! Whether I'm training for a competition or not, I always include weight training into my workout schedule, no matter what! :)

I'm happy to be competing in a drug-tested event that's for sure!!!

      Thanks for the support!
