10K Recap: It's Official...

I ran my very first 10K race!!!

What an incredible and surreal experience it was!

My running partner Nookie!

I swear...

It was such an amazing evening with friends and Runners from all over the world that my nervousness disappeared in no time! (The energy was so contagious, I didn't have time to be anxious!)

SuperFit and Nikki who were there to cheer us on by the sidelines!
Sly and Annie!
SuperFit and me!
Pretending like I don't actually love it ;)
Nikki, Nookie and Me

I couldn't have asked for a more perfect first race!

The goods in my Runner's package!
Bibbed up!
Taped up with KT Tape and sporting my new Lululemon shorts!
Can you say comfortable?! Holy moly!
I got taped at the Race Expo just hours before!
I bought myself some too, which I look forward to testing out!
(It's supposed to help treat and prevent common injuries!
In my case, my hamstring)
Having FUn with some kind of leprechaun...
Wearing my awesome Mizuno Wave Inspire 8s and...
my Ottawa Race Weekend tracker chip!
Waiting to begin!
And soon...
Getting ready to make our way to the start line!

As you all know...

I was bit concerned about the heat we expected for the race because...

I got a small dose of heat exhaustion or sun poisoning during my last run!

The race wasn't until 630pm, so I was happy I didn't have to run it during the hottest portion of the day! (The weather was absolutely perfect!)

And yes, I did make sure to...

Drink lots of water!

***The Start, The Race, The Finish**

Once it came close to the start time...

Nookie and I lined up patiently waiting for the horn to go off!

I must say...

It was definitely crowded...

We're in there somewhere among the 10,000 registered for the 10K run.

Not for one second did I feel claustrophobic! (I actually felt pretty pumped to get going!)

But I will admit...

I did have little butterflies in my stomach, knowing I was just minutes and seconds away from beginning!

As soon as the horn went off...

We walked (lol)! (It takes awhile before you actually cross the start line, where your chip then officially begins to clock your time!)

The moment we started running...

I knew it was on and I was excited!

In no time did...

Nookie show me how to find openings within the crowd with the intent of running through them! (To get ahead in other words! I found this to be really neat!)

And before you knew it...

We saw SuperFit and Nikki cheering us on! (I think I may have pulled out a dance move or two as I ran by them!)

I think they were having FUn ;)

**Kilometre 1 - 5**

The first 5K were great!

We chatted and we found a pace I was comfortable running at!

I followed Nookie through small burst-like sprints to get us past the crowds (I've never done sprints before lol I liked them though!) and through all of this...

I felt good!

Come Kilometre 5...

There was a hill.

Oh, I love hills! (Insert sarcasm here lol)

My pace didn't change on the way up and I stuck by Nookie until we got back onto the flat, that is, until we reached...

Kilometere 6!

**Kilometer 6-8**

My paced slowed down a tiny bit once we came to the 6K mark! (There were placards indicating at which point we were in the race! I should note, I wasn't wearing my (SuperFit's) Garmin, neither was my running partner so, we were both watching out for the signs!)

My running partner asked me if I was feeling okay (because I had slowed down)...

And I was, I just felt the need to press on the breaks a little bit!

As we soon approached the 7K mark...

We ran past the water station, where I quickly grabbed and chugged back a little H20 to moisten my mouth and throat!

Soon after, I ended up getting...

A cramp in my upper right rib, at which point...

Nookie advised me to walk, stretch it out and flex & push my abs down and out! (It worked! It was also encouraging having a stranger telling me to breathe it out! I smiled!)

It didn't take long before...

I went back to my normal pace and started up again!

I have to say...

I absolutely loved the energy going on throughout the entire course of the race!

People cheering, ringing their bells, tooting their horns, it was really awesome!

Somewhere in between our 6-8K...

Nookie told me the moment we hit the 8K mark, it was time to speed up until the end!

This is when I would have give it my all! (Well, the most of what I had left in me lol)

I knew SuperFit and Nikki would be waiting for us at the last Kilometre (with our special glasses), so...

I was excited to get to them fast!

They see us. We see them!
Here's a closer look at us lol

**The last 750mm**

In the last 750mm left in the race...

I felt someone grab my hand and say...

"Let's go FU, let's finish it!"

It was SuperFit! (Nikki was on Nookie's left!)

They both ran up to us to...

Run the rest of what was left of our race!

That was amazing! (I was super happy!)

And, before you knew it...

We had all crossed the finish line together!

SuperFit taking a picture of Nookie and me once we crossed the finish line.
Catching my breath and breathing in the moment!
We did it...

After getting my medal (and feeling proud of myself!)...

We, of course, took more shots of the this amazing moment!

My very first Running Medal :)

I mean....

I finished my very first race, with Nookie by my side! (Thank you so much Nooks for doing this with me! Your support means a lot to me!)

Merci Nookie!
So positive, energetic and filled with encouraging messages!
The Three Amigas :)

**Aaaahhhh! So good!**

In terms of my timing...

I ended running the 10K in 58:10:08! (A new PR!)

I was thrilled about that! (Like this day couldn't get any better!!!)

Sly and Annie did awesome too, setting new PRs as well!

Sly: 51:11:09 and Annie: 55:00:41.

In the end...

We all had a great race and we couldn't have asked for a more perfect evening!

La gang!

**Heading home**

Before making our way back to our car...

I bumped into Susan and D!

They had a blast as well!

I was really happy to see them at the finish line!

All in all...

I had such a wonderFUl first race and I absolutely loved every minute, every stride and every breath of it!

Yep Yep!

Now, my plan is to...

Work towards my 2012 goal of running a Half Marathon in the Fall...

Nookie will be running with me too! (She will help me train for it as well! I'm so thankFUl for that!)

There's no doubt...

I can't wait to start working on this goal of mine seeing...

I'm already registered for it! (It's two days before my birthday in September!)

Oh, and one more thing...

If you're wondering about my celebratory meal...

Let's just say...

I made the most of it!

We went to The Works!
Burgers and Fries oh my!

Once again...

Thank you all so much for all the good luck wishes, the congratulatory messages, the support and the encouragement!

It means a whole lot!

Thank you to all the organizers and volunteers of Ottawa Race Weekend, it was truly a spectacular and well-run event (no pun intended lol)! Wow!

And finally...

Congratulations to all the Runners who participated in this event!!!

This experience will definitely be stored into one of my most memorable moments!

I think Teddy was proud of his Mama ;)

  16. AnonymousMay 30, 2012

CONGRATS! OK so this post makes me want to hang out with you more than ever. The first pic is def my favorite FU face pic EVER especially with the glasses. I also love the one of SuperFit kissing you on the cheek, and the pic of your post-race meal. You always look like you're having such a blast. Keep it up!

  17. KT tape and those glasses must be the lucky charm. No.. you are! Great job lady.

  18. my best 10k was under 42:00. I never wrote about it nor took snapshots. No medal as I didn't place in the top three women. It's funny how the sport has changed so much and breaking an hour for a 10k has now become some feat of...well, it's really not running, but sure you can call it that I guess.
