Who Knew My Body Could Stretch Like That...

As I mentioned in my post entitled seasonal boos and blahs...

I signed up for my first Bikram Yoga Class at Rama Lotus here in Ottawa!

I bought myself a mat.
(After my first class)

As I've been wanting to add something new into my routine...

The idea of starting Yoga seemed like the perfect fit! (A friend of mine sold me on the idea! And trust me, it didn't take much selling considering how much I've been feeling the need for a really good stretch as well adding some form of relaxation into my system!)

Having said that...

I've always wanted to try Bikram because I was intrigued by the hot room and took no issue with...

Sweating! (We all know I do this regularly!)

I'm sure SuperFit wouldn't mind ;)

As I am very new to Yoga, I went into the class...

Not knowing much at all! (And I still don't know very much but I will learn!)

Source

All I knew (based on my research and conversations with my friend) was...

It incorporated a total of 26 postures:

13 standing; and
13 on the floor!

Source

I also knew that...

The room would be very, very hot.

Why so hot?! Because...

"It warms your muscles, and allows for a deeper workout and cleanses the body by flushing out toxins." source

FUrthermore to this style of yoga...

"...The 90-minute program stimulates the organs, glands and nerves, moving fresh oxygenated blood to 100 percent of the body, restoring all systems to a healthy working order. It can also promote weight loss and limit the effects of aging. In addition, the Bikram series of postures combines skills of concentration, patience, determination and self-control, that increase mental clarity and reduce stress." source

Yes I did do this pose :)

As the day finally came to my first Bikram Yoga class...

I got up at 4:45am, finished packing my gym bag and picked up my friend at 5:40am. (Yep, it was an early morning!)

Once we got to Rama Lotus...

We got ourselves some prime parking! (Parking downtown is never a breeze, which is why this is a big deal! It's also because we were 1/2 hour early for the class! lol)

As we were greeted with a big smile upon entry to the studio (at 6am)...

I filled out my papers, rented a mat, headed to the change room, locked up my stuff and left everything behind except for...

My water and towel! (I was told I would need both! I now know why lol)

As we were the first ones to arrive...

We settled ourselves in the hot room and laid down until it was time to begin! (It was very hot but not uncomfortably hot...but I really like it hot, so I enjoyed the heat quite a bit!)

Actually...
I loved the heat!

The room was dimly lit and the air was calm...

It was already very relaxing! (Perfect way to start my morning!)

As soon as the class begun...

I was ready to get my stretch on!

**I was a bit nervous because I was obviously a beginner and didn't want to stick out like a sore thumb! I soon came to realize no one cared. It was a class for all levels. I felt comfortable, instantly...despite how ugly my poses may have looked lol**

I was really happy too because...

The instructor was amazing in her instructions as she took us through all the poses! (Her calm nature was also very soothing!)

I must admit...

Some Many of the poses were freakin' hard for me as...

I'd never before stretched my body in that fashion! (Although it really, really felt good! My muscles really appreciated it!)

Actually...

There was one pose in particular that I just couldn't get (3x over)...

So...

We laughed until I got it right! (I did, eventually, get it! lol)

It was the arm crossing I was having difficulties with!
Oy!

After 90 minutes of intense stretching and sweating...

My whole body was soaked but yet so relaxed at the same time! (So soaked I had troubles holding certain poses because my body was dripping wet...in other words, I had no grip!)

**What I also really enjoyed about the class was that my mind only concentrated on what it was that I was doing. It was a great way for me to meditate, (so to speak), on what was going on in that present moment. No outside thoughts, just me, myself and I in a hot room, stretching every piece of me, focusingconcentrating, relaxing in every way, shape and form (literally!). It did my body and mind good!**

After I showered and got dressed (into dry clothes!)...

I made myself a bowl of Protein Oats with some PB2 Goodness! (It may not be pretty, but it was really yum!)

Protein Oats:

1/2 Cup Minute Oats
1 Scoop Chocolate Protein Powder

I added Boiling Hot Water until I reached my desired thickness.

Toppings:

1/2 Banana
1 1/2 T PB2

All that being said...

I will definitely be back for another session! (Actually, I did go back! And, once again, I felt FUreakin' awesome!)

Questions FU You...

1. Have you ever done Bikram Yoga? If so, did you like it?
2. What's one thing you did recently that was outside of your regular routine?

Oh and by the way...

Remember I asked if you thought I should leave my hair blonde or go back to brown?!

Well...

I went darker! (Although I still do have some caramel highlights! I think that was a fair compromise lol)

The important thing is...
I love it :)

  2. You hair is PRETTY!

So, Bikram... how quickly do you move from one pose to the next? Does the instructor tell you how to do it? And how did you EVER do #12?

    1. Thank you!

We do each pose twice. It's a very moderate pace. The instructor guides you through each pose, which makes it easy to follow. Not once did I feel lost!

      I haven't master #12....not.at.all. lol

      Try it! I loved it!

  11. Oh, so glad you had a good first Bikram class! Exciting! Funny...I also just went darker. I used to be a blonde (like my whole life) and now I'm brunette. The reactions from people are always pretty entertaining. ;)
