I will not be an anti-social runner...

As my 10k race is soon coming up (in May)...

I thought getting in some mileage outside would probably be a good idea! (I can only do so much on the treadmill!)

4 Layers of tops is what I needed for the...
Icy cool weather!

So...

Being asked by my friends Nookie and Nikki if I wanted to join them for an outdoor run was perfect! (They are my true inspirations when it comes to running. Both being Marathon Runners and Coaches!)

Summer 2011.
Nikki left. Nookie Right.

Plus...

The weather had been pretty mild over the span of a few days, which made it seem like great timing!

Not real time.

As the day to our scheduled run approached...

The weather decided it would change its course.

How exactly?

It decided to snow the evening prior to our running date.

I should also mention...

Our threesome turned into a fivesome!

Now...

This wouldn't seem like to big deal to many but...

I tend to get really nervous when it comes to group trainings! (Yep, sure do!)

Fall 2011.
My first 11K.

I don't know what it is about them but...

I get really anxious! (Perhaps a fear not to perform well enough!)

To be quite honest...

I spoke with both Nikki and SuperFit about it because it was really starting to freak me out...

Especially because it was going to be a snowy run too!

Both reassured me that it was going to be okay, that I'd be fine, and that...

I had nothing to worry about! (Considering I'd been running for almost 9 months!)

All I had to do was...

Enjoy myself!

It wasn't about the time, speed or whatever, but simply...

Plain ol' FUn!

**I think my nervousness may stem from the fact I've been really independent when it comes to running. 95% of my runs I've done on my own. It's a personal challenge I gave myself so I've been focusing on getting in my zone, learning about my pace and challenging myself with run times. So having said that, not knowing if I can keep up with others as well as the fear of not being good enough worries me. I realize I'm still very new to the sport and that we all have to start somewhere but this is truly how I feel. I just need to suck it up and not be such an anti-social runner when the opportunity presents itself lol And, it has nothing to do with who I'm running with because the group runs I've done have always been loads of FUn, it's just me being a big baby! Waaaanh Waaanh!**

But it doesn't stop there...

Another one of my issues (yes, there's another! lol) was that...

I didn't own any winter wear for outdoor running! (This is, after all, my first season of winter running!)

Ah well...

There was no backing out now! (I was committed and was going to see this through! And I'm sorry but, not having the proper attire would be such a lame cop-out! lol)

Come the morning of our group run...

I was still nervous. (Not as much as the days leading up to it, but still nervous nonetheless!)

Having said that...

I came across a quote that gave me a boost of confidence and reassurance! (In the wee hours of the morning!)

Hey...

Sometimes a few words can really knock some sense into you!

True that.

After devouring my breakfast and downing my coffee...

Oatmeal Protein Pancakes!

I started gearing up by layering myself in clothes! (That I mished mashed together!)

Let's just say...

It wasn't long before I looked like a rainbow!

Colour...
Me...
Silly.
Oh...
I wore my toque too!

For those interested...

This was my mish mash of clothing once it was all put together:

Colour or no colour...

Teddy Bear still loved me ;)

Bye Mom...Have FUn!
Gosh, I'm soooo cheese!

Once I met up with the 'gang'....

Everyone was bursting with energy!

I must admit...

It was contagious!

We took a picture before running off!

As we got going...

We made sure to start slow! (Plus, I didn't want to blow before I even got going!)

We slowly increased the pace until we got into our groove and...

I finally felt at ease! (My lungs got used to the fresh air pretty quickly ~ I should thank my asthma pump for that!)

The group was great and I was having a FUn time!

Through the -15 degree weather, snow, slush and ice...

We ran 5.5k! (Nikki, Nookie and Super Sly ran another 12.5k after they dropped me off!)

Throughout our whole run...

The sun was shining (I eventually had to take my hat off because I was getting really HOT!) and...

I couldn't help but think...

What better day to go out for a run and what better group to run with!

Having sucked it up and gotten over my nervousness...

I was super happy I went and now I can't wait for the next time! (With the group!!!) :)

I should note...

SuperFit was super proud of me when I got home!

He welcomed me with a big hug and shot of espresso! (I got a boost of energy from it so I ran another 5k! lol Just joking!)

The perfect 28 second shot.
Apparently this is a good thing ;)

I might ask him to make me a hot chocolate with whipped cream next time around! ;)

Oh and one more thing...

Nookie, Nikki and I decided to extend our morning over...

More caffeine!

Nookie and Baby Mavee.
La belle Nikki!
Not my bear paws!
Although they are good ;)

Okee..

I gotta run...I'm wired! ;)

  3. You looked adorable in your rainbow outfit! I have felt nervous about running in a group as well, or any new senario. I think it is good to be well balanced. It's not good to always run alone and not good to always run with a group. Sounds like the run went well, which is the most important thing about running.. enjoying the journey. :)

  4. Group runs always make me super nervous too. I don't mind running with my hubby, but other than that...solo all the way

  5. Sometimes running in a group can be intimidating because I worry that I'll be the slow one :) But, for the most part, it makes the time fly by!

  6. You're so cute in your rainbow! I run alone a lot, but it's because I run at weird (later/hotter) times. i'd love a good running group! Congrats on being social!

  7. I like running solo and in a group, it just depends! But long runs are way better with people because it makes them go by so much faster!

  8. Thank you everyone for all your feedback and comments! I will become a social runner and get excited about it! (As opposed to becoming a nervous wreck!) Yes. I. Will. :)
